Algiers – September 2025 – In an address marking the historic anniversary of the founding of the General Union of Algerian Traders, Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders Laïd Rebiga underscored the enduring role of Algeria’s merchants as both staunch allies of the liberation struggle and vital contributors to the nation’s modern development.
Rebiga emphasized that this commemoration is not merely a remembrance, but an act of loyalty and recognition toward the sacrifices of traders and craftsmen who stood shoulder to shoulder with the National Liberation Front. “They inscribed radiant pages in Algeria’s history, from providing political, logistical, and financial backing to the revolution, to offering their very lives in pursuit of freedom,” he affirmed.
The minister recalled the challenging circumstances in which the General Union of Algerian Traders was founded, only days after the landmark Soummam Conference. This timely initiative, he noted, reflected the unwavering determination of traders to assume their patriotic duty, establishing a revolutionary organization that became a steadfast support structure for the independence movement in multiple dimensions.
Rebiga further highlighted that the values instilled by Algerian traders during the liberation struggle—discipline, loyalty, sacrifice, and profound faith in the homeland—remain a wellspring of inspiration for new generations. Today, he argued, Algeria is once again placing its trust in this vital sector as a central partner in the nation’s economic renaissance.
The minister praised the structural and legislative reforms spearheaded under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reforms designed to modernize the commercial system, regulate economic activities, and improve the investment climate. These measures, Rebiga underlined, are paving the way for greater entrepreneurial freedom, unleashing national potential, and positioning the trading sector as a cornerstone of Algeria’s development agenda.
Concluding his address, Rebiga called for deep reverence to be paid to the martyrs among the traders, stressing that this anniversary must serve as a solemn moment of gratitude to their memory. “It is a moment of humility and reverence for their souls, and for all the martyrs of our nation, who sealed with their blood the epic of independence,” he declared.
