Largest Livestock Vessel Arrives at Algiers Port Ahead of Eid al-Adha: Over 34,000 Imported Sheep to Reinforce National Market Supply

In a strategic move to meet soaring demand and stabilize livestock prices ahead of Eid al-Adha 2025, Algeria receives two major shipments of imported sacrificial animals, including the largest livestock cargo to date from Romania and a significant arrival from Spain.

Algiers, Algeria | May 21st, 2025 —  In anticipation of the high seasonal demand for Eid al-Adha, Algeria has taken a major step in reinforcing the national livestock supply chain. The Port of Algiers today received the vessel Polaris 3, one of the largest livestock carriers in operation, arriving from Romania with a massive shipment of 34,000 sheep. This marks the most substantial single livestock import operation since the onset of Eid al-Adha 2025 preparations.

The Polaris 3 had set sail from the Romanian port of Midia last Saturday, making its journey across the Mediterranean as part of a government-backed pre-emptive plan to secure sacrificial animals for citizens while curbing speculative price hikes and ensuring market equilibrium.

In parallel, the Port of Oran also received a significant shipment early this morning. The vessel SHORTHORN EXPRESS, arriving from Spain, docked with a cargo of 13,000 sheep, further bolstering the state’s comprehensive effort to ensure widespread availability of livestock during this crucial period.

These dual operations underscore Algeria’s proactive strategy in addressing the seasonal surge in demand and supporting the purchasing power of citizens. By injecting large quantities of imported sheep into the market, the state aims to avoid supply shortfalls, discourage illicit trade practices, and regulate prices through controlled distribution.

The initiative is part of a broader national programme meticulously implemented to anticipate market needs, promote price stability, and safeguard consumer access to livestock throughout the country during Eid al-Adha.
