Speaking to Algerian media, Sahrawi Youth and Sports Ministry Secretary-General Mohamed Said Dadi said the match carried multiple meanings beyond sport. โWe are pleased to play this match in Algeria and in a stadium bearing the name of one of the great leaders we honour,โ he said, noting that sports diplomacy would be used to convey the voice of the Sahrawi people seeking freedom and independence.
For his part, Sahrawi Sports Federation president Ahmed Baba Yahya Bouhabini described the federationโs creation as a new phase in what he termed โsports diplomacy,โ adding that friendly matches such as this one aim to bring the Sahrawi cause to global attention.
The Sahrawi team, composed largely of amateur players active in European leagues, particularly in Spain, had previously faced MC Alger in May 2023 at the same stadium, losing 6-1 in an earlier friendly encounter coinciding with commemorations linked to the Polisario Front.
Fridayโs result, however, was less about the scoreline than about symbolism.
