Lavrov: President Tebboune’s Economic Vision Paves the Way for Algeria’s Industrial Renaissance

Algiers – October 2025 – In an interview with Russia Today (RT), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shed light on the strategic dimensions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s landmark visit to Moscow in 2023, describing it as a defining moment in the deepening of Algerian-Russian economic cooperation. Lavrov emphasized that the talks between the two nations focused on launching innovative investment programs designed to usher in a new era of industrial transformation in Algeria.
According to the Russian diplomat, Algeria is now embracing a forward-looking economic model that transcends the traditional dependency on raw material exports. Under President Tebboune’s leadership, the country is pursuing strategic partnerships aimed at acquiring advanced technology and technical know-how to foster the creation of an integrated and self-sustaining industrial base.
Lavrov revealed that during his visit, President Tebboune raised a critical question that captured the essence of Algeria’s economic shift — whether it was feasible to establish fertilizer production plants domestically rather than continuing to export raw materials and import finished products. “Russian experts are currently studying this proposal within a broader framework of industrial cooperation between the two countries,” Lavrov affirmed, adding that the initiative reflects Algeria’s determination to move toward value-added production.
The Russian Foreign Minister highlighted that such projects, once realized, would mark a decisive step toward genuine economic sovereignty for Algeria, freeing it from the lingering influence of former colonial powers. He underlined that the envisioned cooperation would contribute to the establishment of a robust national industrial base, capable of driving the country’s economic diversification and strengthening its manufacturing and processing industries.
“These initiatives,” Lavrov noted, “will not only generate employment and enhance local expertise but will also place Algeria among the leading industrial powers of the African continent.”
