When royal absence becomes the rule rather than the exception, and prolonged travel turns into a governing method, talk of “stability” or “continuity” becomes hollow. The question is no longer whether Mohammed VI is ill, but whether the state itself is being governed at all, and whether the monarchy remains a ruling institution or merely a symbolic façade activated when convenient.

In doing so, the system tacitly admits the failure of “controlled liberalism” and prepares to revert to its origin: naked power, enforced discipline, and governance through fear rather than legitimacy.
The investigation extends beyond politics to strip bare the economic reality, linking political absence to the swelling of royal wealth. Billions accumulate, a holding company quietly exits the stock exchange, transparency is deliberately buried, and the population is instructed to endure austerity and patience. The image is complete: a king who does not govern but profits; a state that erodes while the ruling family prospers. What social contract can survive such structural imbalance? What reform can emerge from it?
Even relations with France reveal the fragility of what was long described as a “strategic partnership.” When a French president suspects a supposed ally of espionage, and when Paris shifts from silent protector to critical observer, it signals the loss of the Makhzen’s historic privilege: silence in exchange for stability. What French journalism reveals dismantles, at its core, the moral and political superiority discourse long directed at Algeria.
