Local Development in Focus: Minister Arkab Engages with Médéa MPs to Accelerate Energy and Mining Projects

Algiers, Algeria– Monday, July 14, 2025 | In a move that underscores Algeria’s commitment to balanced regional development and energy equity, the Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received on Sunday a parliamentary delegation from the wilaya of Médéa. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in the presence of the Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, and senior officials from the ministry.

The session served as a platform for constructive dialogue aimed at addressing local concerns and accelerating the implementation of key infrastructure and energy projects within the region. At the heart of the exchange were ongoing efforts to extend electricity and natural gas services to newly established residential zones, rural dwellings, agricultural operations, and industrial areas across Médéa.

Particular attention was given to the southern part of the wilaya, where service quality and frequent power outages remain a source of frustration. The delegation emphasized the need to strengthen the electrical grid, improve maintenance protocols, and ensure uninterrupted service to support residents and businesses alike.

The delegation also called for the construction of new fuel stations along the highway network, citing increasing traffic and rising consumer demand. This infrastructural enhancement is seen as essential for economic mobility and regional connectivity.

In the mining sector, parliamentarians highlighted the strategic potential of local mineral resources, with special focus on the Berrouaghia barite production facility. They stressed the importance of revitalizing mining investments to create jobs, boost local revenues, and support downstream industries within Médéa.

Responding to the concerns, Minister Arkab reiterated the ministry’s close monitoring of all ongoing projects in the region. He reported that 535 out of 687 identified agricultural holdings are already connected to the national electricity grid. He also pointed to notable improvements in energy access, with electricity coverage in Médéa reaching 94%, and natural gas connectivity standing at 74%—clear indicators of the state’s broader strategy to ensure energy inclusivity and equitable development.
