“Made in Algeria” Gains Ground: National Cheese and Dairy Export Fair Showcases a Sector Poised for International Breakthrough
By Dr. Hana Saada

Algeria’s strategy to position its agro-food sector within global value chains took a visible step forward with the inauguration of the National Cheese and Dairy Products Export Fair in Tizi Ouzou, an event designed to consolidate a rapidly expanding industry and project its capabilities onto international markets. The initiative, led by Kamel Rezig under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, reflects a broader policy orientation aimed at diversifying exports beyond hydrocarbons.

Hosted at the Saïd Tazrout sports complex, the fair brought together 159 exhibitors, including 71 manufacturers, 57 artisans, and 31 start-ups representing approximately ten wilayas. This diverse participation underscores the structural depth of the sector, where traditional craftsmanship, small-scale entrepreneurship, and industrial production increasingly intersect within a coordinated export-driven framework.

At the centre of this initiative stands Tizi Ouzou, widely regarded as a national benchmark in cheese and dairy production. The region’s longstanding traditions, combined with a progressively modernised production network, have cultivated a distinctive ecosystem where artisanal know-how, family-based expertise, and institutional support converge. This synthesis, according to Rezig, has endowed local products with a competitive edge and a reputation for quality capable of meeting the demands of international markets.

Beyond its symbolic dimension, the fair serves as a platform for economic projection. The valorisation of local resources—transformed into high value-added products—illustrates a model of territorial development that aligns with national ambitions to elevate Algeria’s agro-food industry. In this context, Tizi Ouzou emerges not merely as a production hub, but as a strategic pole of excellence with the capacity to anchor export growth in the sector.

Participants from across the industry—both industrial operators and artisans—expressed measured confidence in the trajectory of the sector, highlighting the role of public authorities in facilitating production and preparing the ground for international expansion. Their engagement reflects a broader dynamic in which state support mechanisms are increasingly geared towards enabling market access and enhancing competitiveness.

The international dimension of the event was further underscored by the presence of diplomatic representatives from several countries, including Mauritania, Niger, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil and Libya. Their participation signals growing international interest in Algerian agro-food products and highlights the diplomatic and commercial channels through which these goods may access new markets.
