Mahmoud Ali Youssouf: “The IATF Has Become a Marketplace for Investment and a Catalyst for Africa’s Industrial Future”

Algiers – September 2025 – In a statement delivered on his behalf by the Vice-President of the African Union (AU) Commission, Malika Selma Haddadi, the President of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, underscored the strategic significance of the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF-2025), currently underway in Algiers. He described the event as both “timely” and “decisive,” emphasizing its role in shaping Africa’s trajectory toward industrial sovereignty and economic self-determination.
According to Youssouf, the IATF has evolved into far more than a commercial gathering. “The IATF has established itself as a marketplace for investment,” he declared, citing its remarkable achievements since its inception in 2018. The inaugural edition alone attracted over one thousand exhibitors and secured commitments worth $32 billion—a figure that rose to $42 billion despite the devastating disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For Youssouf, the Algiers edition represents a pivotal moment, aligning seamlessly with Africa’s urgent need to move beyond the outdated model of exporting raw materials. “Africa must cease to be merely an exporter of unprocessed resources. It must become the architect of its own industrial development, generating added value, fostering innovation, and consolidating prosperity,” he asserted.
He went on to situate the Fair within the broader framework of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions “an integrated, interconnected, and prosperous Africa.” Each edition of the IATF, he argued, brings the continent closer to that horizon, not simply as a transactional space but as the fabric of a new African renaissance rooted in stability, growth, sustainability, and a shared ambition.
“This is not merely a trade fair,” Youssouf stressed, “it is a strategic platform that cements the foundations of an integrated continent, one that commands its own destiny through cooperation, industrialization, and intra-African solidarity.”
He also highlighted the AU’s continued efforts to bolster development through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), working hand in hand with key institutions such as Afreximbank to dismantle barriers, strengthen regional value chains, and accelerate Africa’s economic transformation.
