Major Drug Trafficking Ring Dismantled in Laghouat: 46 Kilograms of Cocaine Seized by National Police

Five suspects arrested, two vehicles seized, and a clandestine transport route uncovered in a coordinated anti-narcotics operation led by Algeria’s national police forces

Algiers, Algeria | May 22nd, 2025 — In a decisive blow to organized crime, Algeria’s national police forces successfully dismantled a major narcotics trafficking ring in Laghouat, seizing nearly 46 kilograms of cocaine and arresting five individuals involved in the illicit operation. The announcement was made on Thursday in an official statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

The operation was carried out by the Mobile Brigade of the Judicial Police in Laghouat, following extensive and methodical field investigations. According to the DGSN, the dismantled network was highly structured and specialized in trafficking hard drugs, specifically cocaine, with a planned route through Laghouat towards several northern provinces of the country.

Thanks to discreet surveillance and precise intelligence work, investigators were able to identify a truck used to transport the narcotics, which was intercepted at a checkpoint on the ring road designated for heavy vehicles near the city. Upon a thorough search of the vehicle, law enforcement agents discovered 45.95 kilograms of cocaine expertly concealed in a hidden compartment. The three individuals on board were immediately taken into custody.

Further investigations, conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor and in coordination with the Central Directorate for the Fight Against Illicit Drug Trafficking, led to the arrest of two additional members of the criminal network. Authorities also seized a light vehicle, used for surveillance of the convoy’s route, and a second heavy truck believed to be part of the trafficking operation.

The five suspects have since been brought before the public prosecutor at the criminal pole of the Sidi M’Hamed Court in Algiers, where they are expected to face serious charges related to drug trafficking and organized crime.
