𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – Major General Sid Ahmed Berroumana has been officially confirmed as Commander of the National Gendarmerie, following a presidential decree dated 18 Rajab 1447, corresponding to January 7, 2026. The decree, published in the latest issue of the Official Gazette, formalizes his appointment after he had served as acting commander since April 19, 2025.

Born in 1963 in Algiers, Major General Sid Ahmed Berroumana, the son of a former moudjahid who joined the National Gendarmerie immediately after Algeria’s independence, was born in a Gendarmerie barracks—an emblematic beginning that foreshadowed a lifelong commitment to national service within one of the country’s most disciplined and respected security institutions.

He holds an engineering degree in Automation, with a specialization in Electrical Engineering, obtained from the former ENITA—now the Polytechnic Military School. Known for his strong affinity for information technology and scientific disciplines, he joined the Gendarmerie’s IT service in 1987. After a brief year, he was assigned as a trainer and instructor at the School for Non-Commissioned Officers in Sidi Bel Abbès, before being selected for advanced training at the Higher School of the Gendarmerie  in Mulhouse, France.

Upon his return to Algeria in 1990, Major General Berroumana rejoined the Gendarmerie’s IT service, where he served until 2001. That year marked a decisive shift in his career, as he was appointed to the Directorate of Communication of the National Gendarmerie. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1994 and Commander in 1999, reflecting institutional recognition of his operational and managerial capabilities.

A defining milestone in his career came in 2004, when he was among a group of approximately thirty Gendarmerie officers selected for specialized training in the United Kingdom as part of the launch of the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (INCC). Returning to Algeria the following year, he played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of the INCC within the National Gendarmerie framework.

Thanks to his leadership and strategic vision, the INCC/GN rapidly emerged as a national and international reference in the field of forensic science and criminology. The institute became a highly credible laboratory, producing decisive forensic evidence in numerous criminal cases and contributing significantly to the identification and prosecution of perpetrators.

In 2012, Sid Ahmed Berroumana was appointed Director of Criminalistics at the INCC, before being promoted to Director of the Institute in 2014, a position he held until August 2021. In August 2021, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the National Gendarmerie, further cementing his standing within the command structure.
