Major Narcotics Bust in In Amenas: Six Arrested and Large Cache of Arms Seized by Algerian Army

Algiers, Algeria | December 22nd, 2024 — In a significant operation that highlights the ongoing commitment of Algeria’s security forces to combat organized crime and narcotrafficking, six drug traffickers were arrested, and a substantial cache of firearms and narcotics was seized in the In Amenas region, located in the northeastern sector of the 4th Military Region. The operation, which took place on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, involved the coordinated efforts of the Algerian National Army, local security services, and customs authorities.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of National Defense on Sunday, the arrest followed a confrontation with a group of criminal narcotraffickers. Among the detained individuals, four were Algerian nationals, while two were of Malian origin. This operation marks another crucial step in Algeria’s persistent efforts to dismantle narcotic networks operating across its borders and within its territories.

The operation, conducted in the region of In Amenas, resulted in the seizure of a significant arsenal of weapons, including three FMPK assault rifles, two Kalashnikov submachine guns, 2,490 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, and 2,424,450 Brigabaline psychotropic tablets. Additionally, the authorities confiscated advanced communication equipment, including three Thuraya satellite communication devices, one transceiver, and four smartphones. Two vehicles, specifically Station-type cars, were also impounded.

The operation underscores the high level of professionalism and vigilance of the Algerian Armed Forces in their ongoing commitment to safeguarding national security. It also signals the heightened efforts in the battle against narcotrafficking and organized crime within the country.
