Malian Premier’s Attacks on Algeria Branded as a Diversion: Exiled Academic Etienne Fakaba Sissoko Condemns Junta’s Failures

Algiers – October 2025 – The recent verbal offensive launched by Mali’s Prime Minister at the United Nations General Assembly against Algeria has been sharply denounced by experts and analysts as nothing more than a diversionary tactic to conceal the glaring failures of the ruling military junta.

Etienne Fakaba Sissoko, a university professor forced into exile and a staunch opponent of Mali’s transitional authorities, did not mince words in his reaction. Speaking to National Radio on Wednesday, he declared: “The statements of the Malian Prime Minister are regrettable. This junta has made it a habit: whenever it faces situations where it must meet the basic needs of the population, it fabricates artificial enemies.”

Sissoko stressed that the Malian people, in their overwhelming majority, remain “deeply grateful to Algeria for the immense efforts it has made in favor of peace and security in Mali.” He went on to salute the strong response of Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf during his UN address: “I am particularly pleased to see that Minister Attaf, in his speech, clearly acknowledged that the Malian people do not deserve the current governance, nor the suffering inflicted by a junta clinging desperately to power without delivering tangible results for its citizens.”

Echoing these views, Isabelle Lorenco, a researcher at the African Studies Center of the University of Porto, highlighted that the junta’s policies are precipitating Mali into further isolation. She argued: “The military authorities seek above all to isolate the country and its population while privileging their own personal interests. Far from strengthening stability, this strategy weakens Malian society and exacerbates internal fractures.”

On the international stage, Lorenco added, the junta’s alliances serve neither the ideal of a united and sovereign Africa nor the stability of the region. Instead, they further marginalize Mali, rendering the country increasingly vulnerable to instability.

In his powerful speech at the UN high-level segment, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf struck a balance between condemnation and reassurance. He affirmed: “The Republic of Mali cannot be reduced to a junta that envisions the future of its country solely through the lens of clinging to power and subjugating its people.” Yet he underscored Algeria’s unwavering stance: “Algeria’s hand remains extended, its efforts remain constant, and its reservoir of patience is not—and will never be—exhausted in upholding the fraternal bonds that unite it with the Malian people. These ties stand unshaken by such transient factors, despite their harmful effects and the pettiness of their authors.”
