Malika Bendouda: “Southern Algeria, the Emerging Hub of National Cinema”

Algiers – November 2025 – The Minister of Culture and the Arts, Malika Bendouda, affirmed that the establishment of cinematic cities in the southern regions of the country represents a tangible embodiment of the national cultural strategy aimed at democratizing artistic creation and ensuring that culture is accessible to all Algerians, regardless of geography.
During her working visit to the wilaya of Timimoun, where she supervised the inauguration of a new cinematographic center in Tinerkouk, Minister Bendouda emphasized that this initiative is an integral part of the state’s broader effort to decentralize cultural activity and promote creative diversity. “The creation of cinematic cities in the South reflects the state’s determination to break away from cultural centralization and to make cinema a genuine vehicle of creativity and national influence,” she declared.
The newly inaugurated center, developed and managed by the Algerian Cinema Center (CAC), is designed to serve as a professional space ready to host both national and international film productions. “With this project,” Bendouda stated, “Timimoun now stands as a full-fledged cinematic wilaya, fully equipped to welcome filmmakers and production crews from Algeria and beyond.”
Coinciding with the inauguration, the Minister also announced the opening of the International Short Film Festival of Timimoun, which begins this evening. The event, she noted, offers a unique opportunity for filmmakers, producers, and cinephiles to discover the immense potential of the region — from its vast desert landscapes to its distinctive cultural and architectural heritage — as a natural setting for cinematic creation.
For Bendouda, this cultural milestone represents more than an artistic endeavor; it is a strategic vision to position southern Algeria as both a national and international film destination. By leveraging the region’s unparalleled natural scenery and investing in sustainable infrastructure, Algeria aspires to build a vibrant and enduring film industry that contributes to the country’s cultural prestige and economic diversification.
Concluding her remarks, the Minister stressed that this policy is not merely about film production, but about fostering a fertile ecosystem for audiovisual creativity — one capable of stimulating the creative economy, generating employment, and transforming the Algerian desert into a driving force of cultural and economic dynamism.
