Maritime Connectivity Boosted: GNV Launches Direct Passenger Ferry Line Between Algiers and Sète

In a strategic move to strengthen Mediterranean maritime transport and serve Algeria’s diaspora in Europe, Italian shipping company GNV inaugurates a new route in partnership with Algeria Ferries.

Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2025 — In a step toward enhancing maritime connectivity across the Mediterranean, the Italian shipping giant Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) officially inaugurated on Wednesday a new passenger ferry line between the Port of Algiers and the French Port of Sète. This new route not only promises to facilitate cross-border travel but also plays a key role in serving the large Algerian diaspora community in Europe.

The “Excellent”, a vessel from GNV’s fleet, docked at the Port of Algiers early Wednesday afternoon, marking the route’s inaugural crossing. The ship carried a total of 949 passengers, 653 vehicles, and six motorcycles, directly from the Port of Sète, underscoring strong demand for such maritime services.

A formal inauguration ceremony was held on board the vessel following its arrival, attended by a high-level delegation of Algerian and Italian officials. Distinguished guests included Hamid Lounassi, Advisor to the President of the Republic in charge of NGOs; Jamal-Eddine Abdelghani Dridi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport; Kamel Moula, President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council; and the Ambassador of Italy to Algeria, Alberto Cutillo, among others.

Speaking at the event, Dridi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, praised the launch of this strategic route by GNV in partnership with Algérie Ferries & Transport Maritime (A.L.F.T. Maritime). He emphasized the significance of expanding and diversifying maritime services, particularly for Algerians residing abroad who depend on reliable and accessible transportation options.

Echoing this sentiment, Ambassador Alberto Cutillo expressed his satisfaction with the collaborative initiative, highlighting its role in fostering bilateral ties and expressing hope that such cooperation would extend to additional maritime routes connecting Algerian and Italian ports in the near future.

The new Algiers–Sète line is seen as a key addition to the regional maritime network, reinforcing Algeria’s ambition to modernize its transportation infrastructure while simultaneously bolstering economic and people-to-people exchanges with Europe.
