Massive Chinese Investment in Algeria: $1.6 Billion Integrated Industrial Project for Phosphate Valorization

Algiers – September 2025 – In a decisive stride toward bolstering Algeria’s industrial and mining renaissance, the Director General of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, Omar Rekkache, received a high-ranking delegation from Asia Potash, the Chinese giant specializing in mining exploitation and resource transformation. The delegation, led by Vice President Zheng Yue, unveiled plans for a monumental investment project worth $1.6 billion, aiming to establish an integrated industrial complex dedicated to the valorization of phosphate, alongside the production of ammonia, urea, and compound fertilizers.
The proposed project, set to anchor in North Africa with Algeria as its hub, will rely on natural gas as a primary resource in the manufacturing process. During the meeting, Asia Potash presented a detailed blueprint covering the technical and economic dimensions of the endeavor. Company executives underscored Algeria’s unmatched comparative advantages, from its abundant natural gas reserves to the phosphate-rich mines of the East, affirming that these assets align perfectly with the national strategy of industrial valorization and sustainable resource management.
The initiative dovetails with Algeria’s broader ambition to position itself as a strategic pole for mineral and energy transformation in Africa and beyond. It reflects not only a deepening of Sino-Algerian economic cooperation but also Algeria’s readiness to leverage foreign expertise and capital to fast-track industrial modernization.
Both parties agreed to maintain close coordination, with technical meetings to be held via videoconference to refine operational details and implementation mechanisms. This partnership, supported by the relevant Algerian ministries, is projected to open new horizons for economic diversification, employment generation, and enhanced integration into global fertilizer markets.
