BY: Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS- The Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Mohamed Hamel, has affirmed that the demand for natural gas in global markets is expected to increase significantly over the next three decades.

Speaking at the World Gas Forum in Algiers, Mohamed Hamel stated that by 2050, global demand for natural gas is projected to rise by 34%. This would increase its share in the global energy mix from 23% to 26%. This comes as the world witnesses major shifts towards clean energy research and development to combat climate change.

Reflecting on the agenda of the first day of the World Gas Forum, Mohamed Hamel mentioned that it “includes broadening discussions on the Algiers Declaration, which was prepared yesterday by the specialized high-level working group.”

In the same context, he revealed that “memorandums of understanding will be signed in the evening between the Forum and the African Energy Commission (AFRAC) of the African Union, as well as the Economic Research Institute of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.”

During his address, attended by energy ministers participating in the summit, Mohamed Hamel highlighted the “preliminary presentation of the eighth edition of the World Gas Market Outlook 2050, which is published annually,” noting that “the eighth edition will be officially released on March 12.”

On this occasion, Mohamed Hamel announced Mauritania’s official membership in the Forum as a permanent member, while Senegal submitted a request to join the organization.

The Secretary-General also praised the facilities provided by Algeria to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum for the hosting of the seventh summit, emphasizing “significant support for the opening of the Gas Research Institute headquarters in Algeria, under the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.”
