Mauritania Shuts Down Propaganda Website Targeting Algeria: A Blow to Morocco’s Mercenary Media

Algiers, Algeria | In a decisive act that reaffirms Nouakchott’s refusal to be dragged into dirty geopolitical games, Mauritanian authorities have permanently shut down the website Anbaa.info after it engaged in a relentless smear campaign against Algeria. The move, which follows weeks of speculation after the platform’s initial suspension, exposes the extent to which Moroccan-linked propaganda outlets have been attempting to poison Algeria–Mauritania relations.

The site’s director, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Amin, was formally notified of the closure on August 25 by the Cybercrime Unit of the Mauritanian Gendarmerie. The order, issued on the basis of complaints from the public prosecutor, the Ministry of Communication, and the High Authority for Press and Audiovisual (HAPA), accused the outlet of deliberately spreading false and defamatory content aimed at undermining bilateral ties. Authorities further barred the site’s administrators from using social media as a backdoor to continue their campaign of disinformation.

A Pattern of Mercenary Journalism

This is not the first time Anbaa.info has faced disciplinary action. In March 2024, the same outlet was suspended for two months by HAPA after it was found guilty of spreading fabricated stories against Algeria. Its recent closure marks the culmination of a long pattern of hostility, where so-called “journalism” is nothing more than a hired service for foreign agendas.

The evidence of external manipulation is overwhelming. As early as January 2023, the Algerian Embassy in Nouakchott warned that certain Mauritanian media outlets had become tools in the hands of Moroccan intelligence, trading credibility for dubious perks—ranging from travel junkets and advertising contracts to outright financial incentives. Anbaa.info, far from being an independent media platform, was nothing more than a megaphone for Rabat’s desperate attempts to tarnish Algeria’s image and sow discord in the region.

Morocco’s Fingerprints All Over the Campaign

The closure of Anbaa.info cannot be viewed in isolation. It fits into a well-documented pattern of Moroccan information warfare, in which the Makhzen bankrolls fringe websites and dubious “influencers” to spread venom against its neighbors. By outsourcing its propaganda to such platforms, Rabat hopes to disguise its hand while advancing its expansionist ambitions and masking its internal failures.

But the strategy is failing. Mauritania’s decision to permanently dismantle this toxic mouthpiece signals that its institutions are unwilling to be complicit in Morocco’s disinformation crusade. It also reflects a deeper truth: Algeria and Mauritania share historical, political, and cultural bonds that cannot be shaken by mercenary scribblers acting at the behest of Rabat.
