Algiers, Algeria |  The Communication Unit of Mauritania’s Ministry of Equipment and Transport issued a firm denial on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, rejecting media claims that the ministry was involved in or aware of any plans to establish a border crossing through the occupied city of Smara.

The statement, posted on the ministry’s official Facebook page, described the reports—originating primarily from pro-Makhzen outlets—as “completely unfounded” and “contrary to the ministry’s official position.” The alleged project was reportedly cited during media coverage marking the first anniversary of President Mohamed Ould El Ghazaouani’s second term, with some outlets attributing it directly to the ministry.

The ministry stressed that any official information related to the equipment and transport sector falls strictly within its jurisdiction and is communicated exclusively via its verified platforms, official website, or the Mauritanian News Agency.

It also urged national and international media outlets to verify the accuracy of any claims before publication by contacting competent authorities or referring to official sources. The statement reiterated the ministry’s appreciation for the media’s role as a partner in informing public opinion but warned against the spread of misinformation that could undermine trust.
