Merad Launches Algeria’s 2025 Summer Season with Strong Focus on Security, Beach Access, and Eco-Tourism

From Annaba, the Interior Minister unveils robust operational plans for public safety, stricter regulation of beach concessions, and the promotion of green tourism as key priorities for a successful and inclusive summer season.

Algiers, Algeria | June 21st, 2025 —  Algeria officially kicked off its 2025 summer season with a high-level ceremony held on the renowned “Rizzi-Amor” beach in Annaba, presided over by the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Territorial Development, Brahim Merad. The event was attended by several key government figures, including Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Houria Meddahi, Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal, and Sofiane Chaib, Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, alongside the governors of Annaba and El Tarf.

In his keynote address, Minister Merad announced the launch of comprehensive and precise operational security plans developed by the police and civil protection units to ensure the safety of millions of holidaymakers expected to flock to Algeria’s coasts this summer.

“These plans rely on significantly boosting security presence on the ground to ensure order, prevent incidents, and respond swiftly to any emergencies,” Merad stated, emphasizing the adoption of a preventive and proactive strategy for the season.

He also reiterated President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s firm instructions to enforce the law decisively against the illegal privatization of public beaches, which has historically undermined citizens’ access to the coastline. “Public beaches belong to all Algerians, and no one will be allowed to monopolize or exploit them for personal gain,” Merad declared.

In this regard, he hailed the positive results of the second consecutive year of implementing a joint interministerial directive from the Ministries of Interior, Finance, and Tourism, aimed at regulating beach concession licenses. The policy has not only drastically reduced unlawful exploitation of beaches but also increased municipal revenues by ensuring legal and fair concession management.

“This regulatory framework has brought about an unprecedented improvement in the organization of beaches and services offered to vacationers,” the minister noted. “It strikes a balance between preserving public service and enhancing local financial resources.”

Merad concluded his speech by calling for continuous on-the-ground monitoring to safeguard the principle of free beach access across the national territory.

The ministerial delegation also toured various stands displaying the capabilities of local security and public service agencies mobilized for the season. Cultural and sports performances enlivened the ceremony, reflecting the vibrant atmosphere of Annaba during the summer and showcasing the region’s rich recreational offerings.

The visit further extended to Djenen El Bey beach in the commune of Seraïdi, where mountain sport demonstrations and eco-tourism exhibits underscored Algeria’s growing emphasis on sustainable tourism. The site presented a model for responsible exploitation of natural spaces that combines leisure, environmental protection, and economic potential.
