Minister Meziane Conveys President Tebboune’s Condolences to Romania on the Passing of Former President Ion Iliescu

Algiers, Algeria | In a solemn gesture underscoring Algeria’s longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation with Romania, Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane, acting on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, visited the Embassy of Romania in Algiers on Thursday to extend heartfelt condolences following the death of former Romanian President Ion Iliescu.

Signing the official book of condolences at the embassy, Meziane conveyed a message imbued with deep respect and remembrance for a statesman whose political career left an enduring mark on his nation’s modern history.

“It is with profound sadness and great affliction that we have learned of the passing of the late Ion Iliescu, former President of Romania, whose departure deprives his country of one of its most distinguished historic figures—an eminent leader who played a decisive role in defining the contours of the modern Romanian state and a political symbol of exceptional stature who devoted his life to defending the interests of his country and his people,” read the message.

Meziane went on to stress, “In this painful moment, I wish to convey, on behalf of the President of the Republic and of Algeria—its people and Government—our sincerest condolences and the expression of our deepest compassion to the family of the deceased, to the friendly Romanian people, and to their Government.”

The Minister also took the opportunity to recall the historic visit paid by the late Ion Iliescu to Algeria on January 13, 2003—an event which, at the time, constituted a landmark in the evolution of Algerian-Romanian relations. That visit, he noted, laid the foundations for an enhanced partnership anchored in mutual respect, shared interests, and a spirit of enduring friendship.
