Midad Energy–North Africa Seeks to Deepen Strategic Cooperation with Sonatrach

Algiers – December 2025 – In a new step underscoring the growing momentum of Algerian–Saudi energy cooperation, Minister of State for Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received on Sunday in Algiers the President and CEO of the Saudi company Midad Energy–North Africa, Sheikh Abdulelah Bin Mohammed Bin Abdullah Al-Aiban. The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in the presence of Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi and senior officials, focused on consolidating bilateral relations and expanding joint initiatives in the hydrocarbons sector.
Discussions centered particularly on the implementation of the recently signed production-sharing hydrocarbons contract between Sonatrach and Midad Energy, covering exploration and exploitation activities in the Illizi Sud contractual area, located in the Illizi basin. According to the ministry’s communiqué, both sides examined the status of ongoing consultations and reaffirmed their willingness to establish a joint roadmap ensuring the timely and efficient entry into force of the agreement, in full compliance with the technical standards and operational commitments adopted by both companies.
Beyond this flagship project, the meeting explored additional opportunities for partnership across the entire value chain of the oil and gas industry. These include the development of strategic projects aimed at enhancing knowledge transfer, strengthening technical expertise, and advancing human resource capacities in exploration and production—both within Algeria and internationally. Minister Arkab emphasized the depth of the fraternal ties binding Algeria and Saudi Arabia, stressing the importance of building an economic partnership rooted in mutual strategic interests and aligned with the broader energy vision of both nations.
For his part, Sheikh Abdulelah Bin Mohammed Bin Abdullah Al-Aiban reaffirmed Midad Energy’s profound interest in expanding its investment footprint in Algeria’s hydrocarbons sector, highlighting the promising and stable investment climate the country offers. He reiterated the company’s full commitment to accelerating the execution of joint projects with Sonatrach and to adopting cutting-edge technologies in oil and gas operations to maximize shared benefit and operational efficiency.
It is worth recalling that in October, Sonatrach signed with Midad Energy–North Africa a major production-sharing contract for the Illizi-Sud perimeter under the provisions of Hydrocarbons Law 19-13. The 30-year agreement—extendable by an additional ten years—represents a global investment exceeding 5.4 billion USD, fully financed by Midad Energy–North Africa.
