ALGIERS, March 2nd, 2026 โ Experts and academics emphasized on Monday in Algiers the strategic importance of the mining sector in Algeria, highlighting its central role in driving national economic development and securing the countryโs natural resources as a cornerstone of national sovereignty.
The statements came during a seminar organized by the National Institute for Global Strategy Studies (NIGSS) under the theme: โFrom the National Liberation Plan to Empowerment and Development: A Strategy of Comprehensive Mobilization and the Nationalization of Mines as a Cornerstone of the National Path (1926โ2026),โ attended by researchers, historians, state officials, and professionals from the mining sector.
The Origins of Large-Scale Mining in Algeria
In his opening remarks, NIGSS Director General Abdelaziz Medjahed noted that the seminar coincides with the centenary of the founding of the North African Star on March 2, 1926. The political program of the movement prioritized the recovery of national wealth, particularly mineral resources. Medjahed further emphasized that the nationalization of mines on May 6, 1966, marked a decisive assertion of Algeriaโs sovereignty over its natural resources, after a colonial period during which the mining sector primarily served the needs of French industry.
Historian and lecturer at the Superior Normal School of Bouzarรฉah, Saรฏdi Meziane, highlighted that the North African Star program placed national sovereignty over natural wealth and territorial integrity at the core of the national movement. He recalled that large-scale mining operations in Algeria began in 1871, with the export of phosphates, iron, lead, zinc, coal, and marble to France.
A National Mining Potential Yet to Be Fully Explored
Mining sector expert Rachid Tridi emphasized that the North African Star had demanded the return of mines and other strategic sectors to the Algerian state, and that the nationalization of mines empowered Algeria to fully manage its natural resources.
Industrial economics specialist Reda Amrani underscored the untapped national mineral potential and advocated for enhanced coordination between the National Mining Company (SONAREM) and Sonatrach to optimize the utilization of available data on mineral deposits.
Geology expert Messaoud Houfani pointed to major structural projects launched in recent years, including the Gara Djebilet iron mine, the integrated phosphate project at Bled El Hadba, and the Tala Hamza zinc and lead mine. According to Houfani, these projects are expected to contribute to the development of mining and metallurgical activities while strengthening Algeriaโs position in international markets.
