During a high-level meeting on the sidelines of Shelter Afrique’s 44th General Assembly, Algeria showcased its construction expertise and called for the continental promotion of Algerian building materials as part of a broader strategy for sustainable urban growth in Africa.

Algiers, Algeria– Thursday, July 17, 2025 | In a meeting that underscored Algeria’s continental ambitions in housing and urban development, Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, received Selma Malika Haddadi, Vice President of the African Union Commission, on Thursday in Algiers. The encounter took place in conjunction with the 44th General Assembly of Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB), hosted from July 15 to 17 in the Algerian capital.

According to an official statement from the Ministry, the discussions centered on strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the housing and urban development sectors, with Algeria reaffirming its commitment to sharing its long-standing expertise with African nations. Minister Belaribi emphasized the country’s accumulated experience in the design and execution of major housing projects, as well as the significant technological and material advancements made in the national construction industry.

A key highlight of the dialogue was Algeria’s call to expand the marketing and distribution of its construction materials across African markets. Both parties stressed the strategic importance of promoting Algerian products at the continental level, citing their high quality, competitive pricing, and Algeria’s demonstrated ability to meet rising demand in diverse markets across Africa.

The Minister stated that Algeria’s robust production capacity and its firm grounding in sustainable housing solutions position it as a key player in shaping Africa’s urban future. The meeting served as a platform to advance a shared vision of integrated development, where knowledge transfer, industrial partnership, and regional solidarity form the pillars of a new African housing model.

The presence of Vice President Haddadi added considerable institutional weight to the talks, symbolizing the African Union’s alignment with localized, African-led solutions to the housing crisis and rapid urbanization across the continent.

Participants of the 44th General Assembly of Shelter Afrique—which gathered ministers, financial institutions, urban planners, and policy-makers—deliberated on inclusive strategies to accelerate access to affordable housing and foster sustainable urban development in line with Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
