Minister Bouamama Calls for Strategic Engagement of Foreign Media to Elevate Algeria’s Global Tourism Appeal

Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Zoheir Bouamama, issued a compelling call for intensified media mobilization to spotlight the uniqueness of Algeria’s Saharan landscapes, underscoring that the media sector must assume a proactive role in crafting narratives that reveal the country’s extraordinary potential as a tourism destination.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the official opening of the 7th International Saharan Tourism Festival (FITS 2025), held from 4 to 5 December in Timimoun, Bouamama emphasized that the inclusion of foreign media is no longer a complementary option, but a strategic necessity to position Algeria competitively on the global tourism map.
He described Saharan tourism as an “invaluable and distinctive product,” asserting that Timimoun is its epicenter — a city endowed with striking attributes capable of captivating international visitors. These assets, he argued, reflect a rare combination of natural beauty, cultural depth, and human authenticity that set Algeria apart from other destinations.
Bouamama insisted that Algerian media must bring these distinctive features to the forefront, arguing that visitors are not merely attracted by geography, but by an immersive experience. “Here, humanity lives in perfect symbiosis with nature,” he stated, adding that foreign tourists seek a profound reconnection with themselves, a serenity that modern urban life has eroded. Algeria’s Sahara, in his view, offers precisely this remedy: a refuge of calm, identity, and belonging.
He urged media professionals to present Timimoun and the wider Sahara as privileged global destinations, lamenting that significant work remains to be done, particularly in the realm of domestic media outreach and international visibility. As an encouraging example, he highlighted the recent broadcast of a documentary by a U.S. channel that showcased various regions and tourism sites across Algeria, an initiative that generated notable international resonance.
Bouamama revealed that additional global media entities have expressed interest in pursuing similar projects, a development he views as crucial to expanding Algeria’s international image. He contended that the country must provide global audiences with the opportunity to witness its riches firsthand and promote them to a universal public — an obligation, he argued, owed to the cultural and environmental treasures that characterize the desert.
Reflecting on the broader strategic horizon, Bouamama referenced recent statistics presented by Minister of Tourism Houria Meddahi, describing them as “very encouraging.” He suggested that Algeria could realistically aspire to double its current performance levels, setting as a tangible objective the reception of 100,000 foreign tourists in the short- to medium-term.
He further recalled President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s economic orientation, which prioritizes diversification beyond traditional sectors, affirming that tourism remains a central pillar of this strategy. The presence of no fewer than 25 ambassadors and diplomats at the FITS opening ceremony, he added, underscores the growing international attention directed toward Algeria’s untapped touristic potential.
