Algiers – December 2025 – The Minister of Communication, Zouheir Bouamama, affirmed on Sunday that the Algeria Press Service (APS) has stood not merely as a media structure, but as a living witness to the transformations of a nation determined to forge its own discourse and assert its place among nations. Speaking at the ceremony marking the 64th anniversary of the Algeria Press Service (APS) in Algiers, Bouamama underscored that the institution represents “a living testament to the evolution of a nation that believed in its mission, and a solid mechanism reflecting the Algerian people’s determination to build their own narrative and highlight their place among nations.”
This commemoration brought together senior officials, including the Minister of Communication, Zouheir Bouamama, the Adviser to the President of the Republic in charge of the General Directorate of Communication, Kamel Sidi Saïd, the Secretary General of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), Amar Takdjout, along with officials from various national media organizations.
Bouamama recalled that the Algeria Press Service (APS), founded on December 1, 1961, in Tunis, was created to promote “the legitimacy of our national cause and convey the voice of the Algerian people aspiring to freedom”, in response to the colonial “media disinformation machinery.” He paid tribute to the agency’s pioneers—Mohamed Yazid, Belkacem Medani, Professor Pierre Chaulet, Skander Nordine and Messaoudi Zitouni—whose efforts laid the foundations of a national media platform devoted to truth and liberation.
Today, the Algeria Press Service (APS) faces a new challenge: technological mastery and the fight against disinformation. Bouamama highlighted the “qualitative leaps in the process of digitalization” achieved through strong political will and the dedication of APS staff, enabling the institution to diversify its services, particularly through the launch of multilingual information wires.
The minister stressed that “the struggle for accurate information and the fight against rumors and fake news require constant vigilance and a media vision capable of ensuring leadership—an objective that the Algeria Press Service (APS) has effectively achieved.” He emphasised that, with the support of national authorities led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and through the efforts of its leadership, journalists and personnel, APS has expanded its capabilities by offering audiovisual content and multilingual services that allow it to adapt to global transformations and compete with international media entities.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to media development, Bouamama pledged continued support to the Algeria Press Service (APS) in its “path toward modernization and development,” announcing as a central priority the “revival of the agency’s foreign bureaus”, regarded as a crucial instrument to promote the image of the “new Algeria” and reinforce its political and diplomatic role.
For his part, the Director General of the Algeria Press Service (APS), Samir Gaïd, stated that the service “aims today to remain faithful to the rich legacy of the Revolution and to its distinguished trajectory of media service, which has always been devoted to the nation and its supreme interests.” The commemoration thus served as both a tribute to historical accomplishments and a reaffirmation of APS’s renewed mission: to safeguard national memory while adapting to the demands of an evolving global media environment.
