Algiers, Algeria | July 8th, 2025 — During a press briefing held at the conclusion of his visit to the Saidal Pharmaceutical Research and Development Center construction site, Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry Wassim Kouidri made a firm declaration: the oral anticoagulant “Sintrom 4mg” has not been imported into Algeria since 2023.

Kouidri clarified that a thorough investigation launched in recent days revealed no evidence of counterfeit versions of Sintrom circulating on the national market, reassuring both medical professionals and patients. The product, originally manufactured under its commercial name in Spain, has not been legitimately imported for over a year, in line with Algeria’s pharmaceutical sovereignty objectives.

However, the minister did not entirely dismiss the possibility of illicitly smuggled units entering the country through unauthorized channels, adding that vigilance remains paramount in safeguarding public health from fraud and counterfeit medications.

“This product is no longer a matter of dependency,” declared Kouidri. “Algerian patients are now served by national production, which covers the demand entirely and effectively.”

The minister emphasized that two local pharmaceutical operators are currently manufacturing this essential anticoagulant, ensuring stable availability, regulatory oversight, and strict quality control in accordance with national standards.

Kouidri’s remarks reflect a broader strategic shift in Algeria’s pharmaceutical policy—from reliance on imports to local production and supply chain security. This transformation is key to strengthening the national healthcare system, especially for chronic and life-threatening conditions requiring uninterrupted medical treatment.

The visit to Saidal’s R&D center also reaffirmed the state’s long-term vision to elevate Algeria into a regional pharmaceutical powerhouse, capable of not only meeting domestic needs but also entering competitive export markets.

As Algeria pushes forward with the localization of critical drug production, the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry continues to encourage innovation, public-private partnerships, and a strong regulatory framework to ensure both patient safety and national pharmaceutical resilience.

“There will be no compromise when it comes to the health of our citizens,” Kouidri concluded, affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding therapeutic availability and quality across the nation.
