Minister Sayoud: Algeria’s Ports Enter a New Era of Specialization and Digital Transformation

Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria’s Minister of Transport, Saïd Sayoud, reaffirmed on Monday the strategic role of maritime transport in Algeria’s economic future, announcing the signing of several key agreements with economic operators in the sector during his visit to the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF-2025), held at the Palais des Expositions in Algiers.
Describing the fair as a “decisive and positive event,” Sayoud toured numerous stands, including those of public companies under his ministry, private transport operators, and even the military industry pavilion where he inspected advanced utility vehicles. The minister stressed that the IATF is not merely a platform for dialogue, but a concrete opportunity to strengthen cooperation in vital fields such as maritime logistics and port management.
“Several agreements have already been concluded in maritime transport during this edition, and negotiations are ongoing. We expect additional deals to be finalized before the closing of the fair on Wednesday,” Sayoud declared, noting that a comprehensive evaluation of the event will follow.
Turning to Algeria’s port system, the minister highlighted the reforms already undertaken under the direct guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. “We have successfully implemented the 24/7 operational system across all ten Algerian ports, ensuring uninterrupted service. This has allowed us to significantly reduce ship waiting times, particularly in Algiers, Oran, Bejaia, and Jijel. The progress is undeniable, but the challenges ahead remain considerable,” he emphasized.
Sayoud also revealed that the modernization of ports through digital transformation is set to be the next critical step. “We will move towards digitizing our ports and equipping them with modern technologies to accelerate cargo handling and improve overall efficiency. This is essential if we are to meet the expectations of our economic operators and align with international standards,” he explained.
In a landmark announcement, the minister confirmed that the process of port specialization will begin this very week, following presidential instructions aimed at restructuring Algeria’s maritime infrastructure. “The first stage will consist of a preliminary classification of ports based on their designated activities—whether focused on exports, imports, or specialized operations. This cataloguing will pave the way for a more rational and efficient exploitation of our facilities,” Sayoud said.
He further underlined that negotiations with international experts are underway to ensure the implementation of best practices in port management, alongside the pursuit of high-value partnerships that would inject sustainable added value into Algeria’s maritime economy. “Decisions of great importance will soon be submitted to the President of the Republic for final validation,” he concluded.
