Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2025 — In a determined effort to ensure economic transparency and protect consumer welfare, Tayeb Zitouni, Algeria’s Minister of Domestic Trade and Regulation of the National Market, presided over a high-level meeting on Sunday devoted to monitoring the evolution of prices across the national market, with a particular focus on bottled mineral and spring water.

Held at the Ministry’s headquarters, the meeting included an in-depth presentation detailing the current commercialization status of bottled water products marketed under various national brands. Balancing Market Freedom and Consumer Protection

Minister Zitouni emphasized the critical importance of regular monitoring mechanisms to ensure market transparency, fair competition, and stability, all without infringing on entrepreneurial freedom. He reiterated that the government remains committed to establishing a balanced economic environment where both producers and consumers can operate under fair and equitable conditions.

Zitouni called on all relevant bodies to rely on objective data and rigorous technical studies when assessing market indicators. This analytical approach, he stressed, is essential for crafting regulatory responses that strike a delicate balance between production costs and profit margins on one hand, and the preservation of purchasing power and consumer rights on the other.

This initiative forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at enhancing price transparency, reinforcing consumer confidence, and curbing unjustified markups in essential goods. Bottled water, a widely consumed commodity, was selected as a strategic focus area, particularly given recent public concerns over price volatility and distribution gaps.

The Ministry affirmed its readiness to intervene when necessary to correct distortions and uphold market equilibrium, while continuing to encourage healthy competition among national producers.
