Ministerial Delegation Visits Béjaïa Ahead of Launch of Strategic Zinc and Lead Mining Project

ALGIERS, March 12th, 2026 — A ministerial delegation conducted a working and inspection visit on Thursday to the wilaya of Béjaïa as part of preparations for the imminent launch of the strategic zinc and lead mining project located in the communes of Amizour and Tala Hamza.
The delegation was led by Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, accompanied by Abdelkader Djellaoui, Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, and Karima Bekir Tafar, Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies in charge of Mines. Also present were senior officials, including the CEO of the Sonarem Group and the CEO of the Entreprise des Produits Miniers Non Ferreux et des Substances Utiles (ENOF), along with executives from the ministry.
During the visit, Mohamed Arkab inspected the development works at the entrance of the zinc and lead deposit, emphasizing that the project represents one of the most significant strategic mining ventures currently underway in Algeria. He highlighted its considerable economic and developmental potential, noting that it is expected to play a key role in strengthening the country’s mining sector and supporting broader economic diversification efforts.
The minister stressed the importance of maintaining rigorous and continuous monitoring throughout the various phases of project implementation in order to ensure that work progresses according to the established timetable while adhering to the highest technical standards applied to large-scale mining projects.
The ministerial delegation also attended a technical presentation delivered by the Director of Public Works of the wilaya concerning the infrastructure project designed to connect the mining site to the East–West Highway (Algeria). This road link is intended to facilitate the transport of equipment and materials associated with mining operations and to ensure smoother logistical flows as the project prepares to enter its operational phase.
At the conclusion of the visit, the minister and members of the delegation met with residents of the village of Aït Bouzid, owners of land affected by the project. Local inhabitants expressed their support for the initiative, viewing it as a strategic development that could contribute to the valorization of Algeria’s mineral resources, strengthen economic sovereignty, create employment opportunities for young people in the region, and stimulate economic activity across the wilaya of Béjaïa.
