Algiers, Algeria– Wednesday, July 16, 2025 |  Algeria has lost one of its most distinguished journalistic voices. Ali Draâ, a veteran journalist and respected media figure, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 78 after a prolonged battle with a chronic illness. His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from the country’s political and media spheres, notably from the Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, and the Minister of Moudjahidine and Ayants-Droit, Laïd Rebiga, both of whom hailed the deceased’s enduring contributions to the Algerian press and national memory.

In an official message, Minister Meziane expressed deep sorrow at the loss, offering his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late journalist and to the wider Algerian media community. “It is with hearts resigned to the divine will, steeped in grief and affliction, that I learned of the passing of journalist Ali Draâ,” wrote the Minister. “May God envelop him in His infinite mercy and welcome him into His vast paradise.”

Ali Draâ’s illustrious career was marked by dedication, integrity, and patriotic fervor. Beginning as a journalist for various national newspapers, he rose through the ranks to become Editor-in-Chief of the daily Echaâb. He later served as Director General of El Wahda magazine, and subsequently of the newspaper El Massa, before acting as a media advisor within the Echourouk Group, one of the country’s leading media conglomerates.

In the later stages of his career, Draâ was appointed Spokesperson and Head of Communication for the National Independent Authority for Election Monitoring (ANIE), a post that underscored the trust placed in him at the highest levels of state institutions. His role in shaping public communication around Algeria’s democratic processes was both strategic and emblematic of his enduring commitment to serving the nation.

The Minister of Communication further stated: “On this painful occasion, and in the name of all employees and executives of the Ministry of Communication, I extend my sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased and to all members of the national press. We pray that the Almighty bestows His mercy upon him, grants him forgiveness, and welcomes him into Paradise among the Prophets and the Righteous—what an honourable company. May God also grant patience and comfort to his family. To God we belong, and to Him we shall return.

Minister Laïd Rebiga, speaking in his capacity as head of the Ministry of Moudjahidine and Ayants-Droit, issued a parallel tribute, recalling not only Draâ’s professional stature but also his personal background as a “son of a martyr.” “It is with immense sadness and sorrow that I received the news of the passing of this eminent journalist and noble son of a martyr,” wrote Rebiga. “May God receive him in His infinite mercy.”

Rebiga emphasized the symbolic weight of Draâ’s life journey, which bridged the country’s revolutionary legacy and its post-independence media development. “In this moment of great trial, I can only offer my deepest condolences to his family and companions, praying that the Almighty welcomes him into the company of the Prophets, the Just, and the Virtuous—what a blessed companionship.”

The legacy of Ali Draâ extends far beyond editorial leadership or official communication posts. He embodied the principled conscience of Algerian journalism, a profession he dignified through decades of service rooted in clarity, responsibility, and national loyalty. As tributes pour in from across the nation, his name will remain etched in the collective memory of a generation shaped by his words and witness.
