Mohamed Arkab Hosts FADES Director General Amidst Push for Deeper Strategic Energy and Development Ties

On the Sidelines of the Islamic Development Bank’s Annual Meetings in Algiers, Algeria Presents Its Vision for a Sustainable Energy Future and Development Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria | May 19th, 2025 — In a high-level meeting reflecting Algeria’s strategic drive to expand its partnerships in energy and development, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, received Bader Mohamed Al-Saad, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (FADES), at the Ministry’s headquarters in Algiers on Monday.

Al-Saad is leading a significant delegation to Algeria on the occasion of the 2025 Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank Group, taking place in Algiers from May 19 to 22. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary of State for Mines and several senior officials from the ministry.

This visit, described as pivotal, underscores the longstanding and evolving relationship between Algeria and FADES — a premier Arab financial institution that plays a central role in development financing across the Arab world. The fund is known for its concessional financing, equity participation, and technical assistance, especially in projects of regional and pan-Arab significance.

During the session, Minister Arkab presented Algeria’s strategic roadmap for the energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors, highlighting key national, regional, and international projects currently underway. These include major ventures in hydrocarbons and their downstream transformation, electricity production and green energy distribution, mining sector revival, seawater desalination programs, and Algeria’s ambitious renewable energy and green hydrogen initiatives.

Minister Arkab emphasized the country’s unwavering commitment to building robust energy infrastructure, bolstering national energy security, diversifying sources of energy, and facilitating a sustainable energy transition—pillars that form the foundation of Algeria’s economic growth and social development agenda.

For his part, Mr. Al-Saad lauded Algeria’s vital contributions as an active member of FADES and reaffirmed the Fund’s readiness to support Algeria’s strategic development projects, particularly in the fields of energy and mining. He noted that these align seamlessly with Algeria’s national vision for inclusive and sustainable development.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for the FADES delegation to present the Fund’s new institutional strategy and explore future avenues for collaboration with Algerian institutions. The current economic momentum in Algeria—marked by a surge in infrastructure development, renewable energy investments, industrial expansion, and water resource management—offers promising grounds for enhanced cooperation.
