In a compelling public statement, Doumir underscores the inseparable bond between Arabic and Amazigh identities, urging a return to historical wisdom and inclusive dialogue to safeguard Algeria’s unity

Algiers, Algeria | May 20th, 2025 — In a thoughtful and eloquent message published on his official Facebook page, Dr. Mohamed Doumir, an Algerian academic, researcher, and historical content creator, issued an appeal for comprehensive national dialogue and unity, highlighting the irreplaceable role of historical consciousness in bridging Algeria’s cultural richness. The post also contains an emphatic expression of admiration for the Minister of Communication, Dr. Mohamed Meziane, whom Doumir praised for his inclusive vision and commitment to fostering cohesion among Algerians.

“In the midst of ongoing identity-related debates that enrich our national discourse, it is wise to summon the voice of wisdom and history,” Doumir wrote. “Our Algerian past is not a collection of isolated family histories—it is a soaring epic co-authored by all the sons and daughters of this land, Arabs and Amazigh alike, in unmatched harmony.”

Doumir’s statement, which comes amid heightened national discourse around linguistic and cultural identity, serves as both a call for maturity and vigilance and a reaffirmation of Algeria’s civilizational depth. Quoting the famous historian Ibn Khaldun, he emphasized that the values of kinship, honor, and good neighborliness—praised in the Berber tradition—are deeply intertwined with Arab authenticity, underscoring the futility of divisive narratives based on language, region, or ethnicity.

“When language or ethnicity or regional affiliation is weaponized as a tool of discord,” he continued, “we know—as our ancestors wisely knew—that there are those lurking in the shadows, preying upon the nation.”

Recalling past conversations with his close friend, Minister Mohamed Meziane, Doumir expressed admiration for the Minister’s profound understanding of Algeria’s linguistic duality. “Had he not been so occupied with his national duties, I would have asked him to once again share his reflections—particularly on how Arabic owes a historic debt to two remarkable Amazigh scholars: Ibn Ajurrum and Ibn Mu‘ṭī al-Zawāwī.”

Both scholars, he added, laid the foundations of Arabic grammar and eloquence that are still revered today, through Ibn Ajurrum’s Muqaddima and Ibn Mu‘ṭī’s Alfiyya. Doumir also revisited historical examples of linguistic coexistence, including the Fatimid reliance on oral translation from Amazigh, and how the Almohad Empire rose from a people who spoke two languages, which Ibn Khaldun likened to “two wings of a single bird.”

These examples, Doumir insisted, offer powerful proof that Arabic and Amazigh identities in Algeria have never been adversaries, but rather two pillars of one unified identity, intricately intertwined in history and mutually reinforcing in destiny. Any public controversies based on misinterpreted statements, he warned, must be met with patience, fairness, and discernment.

“We are in dire need of a mature awareness,” he affirmed, “one that understands our languages are not in conflict. Rather, they are like the colors of the Algerian flag—its beauty magnified by its diversity. Amazigh is not under threat. Arabic is not foreign. They are both ours, and we belong to both.”

He concluded with a rallying call for collective responsibility and national dignity: “Algeria is far too vast to be confined to narrow interpretations. She must be built upon unity and elevated through that which unites her people.”
