Algiers, Algeria | April 22nd, 2025 — In a resolute address delivered at the 2nd Regional Meeting in Constantine on Tuesday, Mohamed Meziane, Algeria’s Minister of Communication, underscored the paramount importance of training in strengthening the country’s media system. The gathering, held at the Ahmed Bey Hall (Zénith) in Constantine, brought together over 500 journalists, media professionals, and key figures from various sectors of communication from across Algeria’s eastern region.
“Investing in Training to Secure National Media Front”
Minister Meziane firmly stated that investing in media training would not only fortify the national media system but also establish a strong national front capable of defending the country’s values and accomplishments. Emphasizing the critical role a well-trained, unified media sector plays in the face of modern challenges, he stressed that such training would enable Algeria to confront the rapid transformations in information technologies and their impact on both media practice and the profession as a whole.
The Minister outlined that the primary objective of these regional meetings is to create open forums for dialogue among all stakeholders in the media sector. This would facilitate collaborative efforts to address the various challenges they face, particularly in adapting to the fast-evolving technological landscape. By promoting such exchanges, the goal is to find cooperative solutions to the most pressing issues within the sector.
“Charting a Roadmap for Media Progress”
In his speech, Minister Meziane highlighted the need for a comprehensive assessment of the media sector’s progress. He pointed out that the discussions at the meeting would focus not only on evaluating recent accomplishments but also on formulating a “global roadmap” for the sector’s development. The Minister described the gathering as an opportunity for media professionals to evaluate the national media system’s performance and identify strategies to enhance social cohesion and national stability through a robust and ethical media landscape.
“Aligning Media with Technological Evolution”
Minister Meziane also emphasized the importance of aligning the media with technological advancements while ensuring that necessary regulations and controls are in place. This would safeguard the media from ethical lapses and professionalism breaches, ensuring adherence to the established codes of practice in journalism. According to Meziane, addressing these challenges would be essential for securing a media environment that not only respects professional standards but also promotes the nation’s core values.
The event in Constantine also provided a platform for participants to engage in in-depth discussions during workshops. These sessions focused on several critical issues, including the legal framework governing the media sector and the current state of print, broadcast, and electronic journalism.
“Concluding with Concrete Recommendations”
The outcome of the 2nd Regional Meeting in Constantine will be a series of concrete recommendations. These will be submitted to Algeria’s highest authorities in the hope of shaping a media landscape that is both ethically sound and conducive to national development. Minister Meziane concluded his address by expressing his optimism that the collaborative spirit and insights gathered from the meeting would contribute significantly to the ongoing evolution of Algeria’s media sector.
