Moroccan Disinformation on Algeria–Mauritania Ties: When Propaganda Replaces Journalism

Algiers, Algeria | The latest media storm generated by Moroccan outlets such as Hespress and Sabahagadir.ma underscores once again the widening gap between professional journalism and crude political propaganda. At the heart of the matter lies Mauritania’s categorical denial of any project to open a new border crossing with Morocco — a denial that Nouakchott made crystal clear on August 12, 2025. And yet, Moroccan media chose to ignore the official statement, preferring instead to indulge in fantasy narratives that serve the geopolitical ambitions of the Makhzen.

Selective Amnesia: Ignoring Mauritania’s Official Word

In a formal communiqué, the Mauritanian Ministry of Equipment and Transport dismissed all speculation about a supposed Amgala–Bir Oum Grine crossing, stressing that only its institutional channels and the national news agency AMI represent authoritative sources. Rather than reporting this with transparency, Moroccan outlets simply erased the official denial from their coverage. Hespress continued to amplify “anonymous sources,” twisting silence into consent.

Such manipulation reveals not only intellectual dishonesty but also a deliberate effort to manufacture a parallel reality. By fabricating a false rapprochement between Nouakchott and Rabat, Moroccan media attempt to obscure the actual regional dynamics: Algeria’s growing partnership with Mauritania, built on mutual respect and tangible cooperation.

The Factory of Fake News: A Moroccan Speciality

The irony is glaring. While accusing Algerian media of spreading “disinformation,” Hespress and Sabahagadir.ma themselves engage in unsubstantiated storytelling. They tout an “Amgala–Bir Moghrein strategic axis” without a shred of Mauritanian validation. They peddle the myth of a “Mauritania–Morocco–UAE alignment” despite explicit silence from Nouakchott.

Worse still, these same outlets had once praised the clandestine roadworks undertaken by Moroccan forces near Amgala — until Mauritania’s denial demolished the narrative. What remains is a textbook case of media opportunism: when facts do not fit the agenda, they are conveniently erased.

Weaponizing the UAE: A Convenient Scapegoat

In a further twist, Moroccan outlets drag the United Arab Emirates into the picture, accusing Emirati financing of smuggling networks or covert agendas aimed at isolating Algeria. However, Mauritania’s economy is overwhelmingly anchored in mining exports — gold, iron, and gas — which account for over 76% of revenues. Transparency mechanisms such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) ensure oversight that Moroccan commentators simply ignore.

To reduce Mauritania’s sovereign economic choices to a tool of Moroccan geopolitics is not just deceptive — it is an insult to Nouakchott’s dignity as an independent actor on the regional stage.

The smear campaign against Algerian media, and by extension against Algeria’s relations with Mauritania, reflects the desperation of a Moroccan establishment unable to impose its narrative through legitimate means. The disinformation propagated by Hespress and Sabahagadir.ma reveals a deeper malaise: the steady decline of journalistic ethics under the weight of political servitude.
