ALGIERS- Moroccan police announced on Saturday the mysterious death of Mourad Essghir, a military doctor and prominent dissident, who spent 19 days in a morgue. Essghir, known for his outspoken criticism of the Moroccan regime, especially King Mohammed VI, died in unclear circumstances.

The military doctor, originally from Morocco, had worked in various hospitals in the country before moving to several European and Asian nations. Essghir’s statements targeted the monarchy, corrupt institutions, and security forces, making him a vocal critic.

In recent times, Essghir had been frequenting Morocco and was allowed to leave the country on previous occasions. However, after securing a job contract in French Guiana, he was prohibited from leaving Morocco under unexplained circumstances.

Sources revealed that the travel ban was related to a complaint, and security forces instructed the complainant to file it from abroad.

In his last video, Essghir live-streamed a police visit to his Tangier residence, where officers from the National Judicial Police Unit in Casablanca arrested him based on several summons.

In the final video appearance, the dissident expressed fear, stating that police officers were present at his home, only to disappear later. Subsequently, a family member announced his death on November 12, 2023, after he had been admitted to a Tangier hospital one day earlier due to “internal bleeding in the stomach.” The circumstances surrounding Essghir’s death raise suspicions, with accusations pointing to foul play by the Moroccan regime.

Despite being a public figure well-known to everyone, Moroccan authorities, including the police, claimed not to recognize him. In response, Moroccan opposition journalist Mohammed Al Radi Al Lili points out that even the doctor who examined him, the nurse who supervised him, and the medical team that transported him in an ambulance are familiar with him. He questions how the security apparatus of the Moroccan regime failed to identify him.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the dissident military doctor, Mourad Essghir, are shrouded in mystery. The confusion deepened as the police kept silent about his death for 19 days while his body remained in a morgue, citing an inability to identify him. This reasoning appears baseless, considering the medical professionals who interacted with him. The entire situation raises suspicions of the involvement of the security apparatus of the Moroccan regime in his assassination.
