Algiers, Algeria |  In a searing intervention during the program “Week in Review” hosted by journalist Dounia Filali, Moroccan political analyst Dr. Mohamed El Battiui delivered an unrestrained and blistering critique of France’s conduct toward Algeria and its persistent neo-colonial reflexes in North Africa. His remarks, laced with historical memory and political acuity, laid bare what he described as France’s deep discomfort with an Algeria that has reached “full maturity” — capable of making sovereign decisions across all fields without bending to foreign pressure.

El Battiui stressed that France is visibly unsettled by Algeria’s newfound assertiveness and, in particular, its uncompromising application of the principle of reciprocity in diplomatic affairs. “You ban Algerians from visas, Algeria bans your officials from visas. Whether you’re a diplomat, an official, or a so-called specialist, you now queue like everyone else at the consulate,” he remarked. According to him, this boldness — rooted in national pride — is something sorely lacking in many neighboring states that still grant France privileged access while undermining their own sovereignty.

The Moroccan analyst accused France of fundamentally failing to understand Algerian political culture despite having occupied the country for 132 years. He drew attention to the recent diplomatic spat over visa restrictions, framing it as yet another episode in a long saga of French arrogance colliding with Algerian dignity.

El Battiui then turned to the Western Sahara question, denouncing France’s “flagrant violation of international legitimacy” by undermining the UN process. He accused Paris of “singing outside the chorus” of international law, ignoring the fact that the Western Sahara file is under the jurisdiction of the UN’s Fourth Committee for decolonization. “You claim to be the guardians of international law in the Security Council,” he said, “yet you act in blatant contradiction to its principles.”

In his assessment, Algeria’s diplomatic response to these provocations reflects a mastery of statecraft, forged through decades of struggle and refined by a political culture that refuses subordination. “Algeria is a diplomatic school of the highest order,” he concluded, contrasting its posture with the “short-sighted and duplicitous” approach of French policymakers.
