ALGIERS, March 9th, 2026 — Moroccan academic and human rights advocate Latifa El Bouhsini has delivered a sharp critique of what she describes as the entrenched logic of Morocco’s “Makhzen” political system, arguing that it relies on a paradoxical discourse that simultaneously represses domestic criticism while branding external solidarity as disloyalty.

In a recent commentary that has circulated widely in activist circles, Latifa El Bouhsini examined the ideological contradictions shaping official narratives about citizenship, patriotism, and political dissent in Morocco. According to her analysis, the authorities often mobilize accusations of “betrayal” or “weak patriotism” when Moroccan citizens express solidarity with populations facing conflict abroad, such as in Gaza or Iran.

Yet, she argues, the same voices frequently accuse citizens of “nihilism” or negativity when they draw attention to domestic governance problems, including corruption, inequality, and shortcomings in public services.

For Latifa El Bouhsini, this contradiction reveals a deeper political strategy: the objective is not to cultivate genuine patriotism, but rather to discipline public opinion and discourage independent civic engagement.

A central element of her critique concerns what she describes as the recurring argument that citizens should prioritize “local problems before international causes.” The phrase “Taza before Gaza,” which occasionally circulates in Moroccan political discourse, is often used to suggest that public concern should remain confined to domestic issues.

Latifa El Bouhsini rejects this framing as a false dichotomy. In her view, solidarity with global struggles for justice does not contradict the pursuit of social justice within Morocco. On the contrary, she argues that the same ethical principles underpin both forms of engagement.

Her intervention also challenges what she calls a “state-sponsored interpretation of patriotism,” in which loyalty to the nation becomes equated with unquestioning acceptance of government policies. Within this framework, critics of the political system are portrayed as destabilizing forces rather than citizens exercising legitimate democratic rights.

Latifa El Bouhsini proposes an alternative vision of patriotism rooted in citizenship, dignity, and social justice. For her, authentic patriotism involves defending the rights and well-being of the population, demanding accountability from institutions, and striving for equitable access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity.

The academic also warned against political cultures that encourage passive obedience rather than active civic participation. Societies, she argues, cannot thrive if citizens are expected to remain silent observers rather than engaged participants in shaping their collective future.

More broadly, Latifa El Bouhsini’s reflections point to an ongoing debate in Morocco over the meaning of citizenship and the boundaries of political expression.
