Morocco After Mohammed VI: A Shaken Throne and a Regime in Freefall, Struck by the Blows of an Unyielding Street

✍️ BY: Maamar Gani

Algiers – September 2025 – Morocco today stands at the edge of a decisive juncture that could alter the very course of its political history. The rapidly unfolding events—from the surging wave of popular protests spearheaded by “Gen Z” to mounting reports about King Mohammed VI’s deteriorating health—reveal the profound crisis of a regime that has long since forfeited its legitimacy. A monarch absent from his people for years, leaving the country to sink into poverty and corruption, has turned his back on demands for dignity and social justice, while the palace itself festers with internal rivalries and an early war of succession.

Reports emerging from media outlets and political circles increasingly point to the king’s worsening condition, alongside bitter infighting within the royal family and security apparatus over who will inherit a throne stripped of its aura. These developments open the door to perilous scenarios: a political vacuum should the king prove unable to rule or pass away, a potentially bloody struggle for power among rival factions of the regime, or even external meddling—particularly from the Zionist entity and France—in a bid to safeguard a monarchy that has lost every pillar of survival save for its dubious alliances. Those very alliances, forged through normalization and subservience, have effectively bartered away Morocco’s sovereignty and rendered the country a mere morsel for foreign appetites.

Yet Morocco’s crisis cannot be reduced to the king’s failing health alone. It is the crisis of a state transformed into a private fiefdom of the royal family—a profound rupture of trust between a people and institutions that serve as little more than façades for absolute rule. A powerless government, corrupt elites, and a Makhzen that knows nothing but repression as a response to dissent—all of this only amplifies the legitimacy of a street in revolt, which sees the regime not as a guardian of the nation’s future, but as its heaviest burden.

Today’s youth uprising is far from a fleeting social protest; it is the expression of an entire generation refusing to be buried beneath the rubble of corruption and tyranny. Their chants for dignity and justice are redefining politics in Morocco, confronting the regime with the very question of legitimacy it has long evaded. No matter how brutal the repression, it can no longer smother a voice that rises from every city, neighborhood, and marginalized village.

Morocco after the king will face a historic crossroads. Either Mohammed VI’s death or incapacitation becomes the moment of birth for a new state—one of the people, institutions, and transparency—or the country will plunge into utter chaos if the regime persists in answering popular anger with iron and fire. In either case, one certainty remains: Morocco will never again resemble its former self. This time, the decision no longer rests in the palace—it lies in the hands of a street that has reclaimed the initiative.

It is a historic moment, one that may mark the beginning of the end for the Makhzen or the dawn of a different Morocco altogether. The future is now being written by a generation unafraid of repression, unmoved by the regime’s threats, and unrelenting in its insistence that there can be no return to the past.
