Morocco’s Dirty War on the Rif: A State-Sponsored Project of Decay

Algiers, Algeria | The mask has slipped. Behind Morocco’s carefully crafted image of “development” and “modernization” lies a brutal and calculated campaign—one that targets not political opponents, not foreign rivals, but its own occupied sons and daughters of the Rif. The weapon of choice? Not bullets or bombs, but the slow, corrosive poison of narcotics.

According to Yuba El Ghadioui, a senior figure in the National Rif Party, the Moroccan Makhzen is orchestrating a methodical sabotage of the Rif by flooding its streets, schools, and neighborhoods with every variety of narcotic available. This is not accidental. It is a deliberate state strategy aimed at neutralizing dissent, suffocating the rising tide of Rifian awareness, and crushing the spirit of an already oppressed population.

The evidence is damning. Drug dealers operate in the open, in broad daylight, their activities visible to and—critically—tolerated by Moroccan security forces. The machinery of law enforcement, which could dismantle this network overnight, is instead a silent partner in its expansion. The message to the youth is as clear as it is cynical: drown your anger in powder and pills, and forget your dignity, your history, and your rights.

When the Makhzen is cornered by public exposure, it responds not with genuine reform but with media theatre—a staged “anti-drug” campaign designed to pacify both domestic and international audiences. These spectacles are little more than smoke and mirrors, a desperate bid to whitewash a reputation eroding under the weight of its own corruption.

As El Ghadioui rightly asks: how can the chief exporter of poison claim to be its eradicator? How can the hand that shields traffickers also raise a banner of moral authority? The truth is unambiguous: Morocco is not merely complicit in the narcotics plague ravaging the Rif—it is the architect, the financier, and the primary beneficiary.

The scale of the crime transcends the borders of the Rif. Morocco’s drug exports, especially hard narcotics, stretch across Africa, infiltrate Europe, and penetrate global markets. This is not a localized scourge—it is a transnational criminal enterprise with the full blessing of a state apparatus that trades in human ruin as if it were any other commodity.

The National Rif Party has vowed to continue its struggle, to expose and dismantle the networks poisoning their youth, and to hold accountable every official, dealer, and collaborator. This is no mere political stance—it is a declaration of war against a system that sees its own citizens as expendable in the pursuit of control.
