Morocco’s Dual Narrative: Supporting Global Amazigh Congress While Suppressing Rifains!

ALGIERS- Recent events in Morocco highlight a stark contradiction in the country’s approach to the Amazigh cause, as it claims to support the Global Amazigh Congress while simultaneously suppressing the Rifains, particularly in the Rif region. This duality raises questions about the sincerity of Morocco’s commitment to Amazigh rights and its true stance on indigenous communities within its borders.

The Historical Suppression of Rifains:

  1. 1959 Bombing of the Rif: The Rif region faced significant unrest in 1959 when Prince Hassan II ordered the bombing of the region to quell an uprising, known as the Rif revolt. The violence resulted in thousands of casualties, particularly in the town of Beni Ourighel.
  2. 1984 Uprising and Royal Remarks: In another revolt in 1984, King Hassan II made derogatory remarks about the Rifains, referring to them as “Awbach” or societal waste. This further exacerbated tensions and highlighted a historical disdain for the Rif community.
  3. Recent Ongoing Suppression: The Rif region has been subjected to ongoing suppression, including the imprisonment of leaders like Nasser Zefzafi and the recent assassination of Dr. Mourad Sghir. The government’s response to the recent earthquake in the region has also raised concerns about the welfare of the Rifains.

Contradictions in Moroccan Policy:

  1. Amazigh Cause as a Red Line: While the Moroccan government claims to support the Amazigh cause globally, particularly through its association with the Global Amazigh Congress, the reality within the country suggests a different narrative. The Amazigh cause appears to be a red line that the Moroccan monarchy is unwilling to address internally.
  2. False Support for Palestine: Morocco’s official stance in supporting the Palestinian cause, including its role in presiding over the Committee on Jerusalem (El Qods), stands in stark contrast to its actions. Reports indicate that Moroccan soldiers from the Royal Armed Forces have supported the Zionist military in Gaza.
  3. Genocidal Pact with the Zionist Entity: There are accusations of a genocidal pact between Morocco and the Zionist entity, where both nations engage in suppression and violence against indigenous communities – the Rifains in Morocco and the Palestinians in the case of the criminal Zionist entity. This raises questions about Morocco’s sincerity in championing the causes it claims to support.

Call for International Scrutiny:

The contradictory stance of Morocco, ostensibly supporting Amazigh rights globally while suppressing the Rifains internally, calls for international scrutiny. Human rights organizations and the international community are urged to investigate the atrocities in the Rif region.
