Despite Morocco’s Claim of Assisting Spain During the Recent Blackout, Expert Reports and Evidence Show It Was a Sham. Morocco’s Electricity Network is Criticized for Being One of the Worst in the World, with Frequent Outages and Unreliable Power Supply.
Algiers, Algeria | May 5th, 2025 — In an astounding display of propaganda, Morocco has made unsubstantiated claims about assisting Spain during a recent major blackout, attempting to paint itself as a reliable energy partner in the region. These claims were quickly debunked by Spanish experts and journalists, who exposed the truth behind the misleading narrative put forward by the Moroccan authorities.
Morocco, a country notorious for its poorly functioning electricity grid, which regularly faces power outages, sudden supply drops, and unreliable service, had the audacity to assert that it had helped Spain during the recent energy crisis. Spain, however, swiftly and publicly rejected these claims, making it clear that Morocco’s energy infrastructure is woefully insufficient to even meet its own needs, let alone support a neighboring nation facing a critical energy shortage.
Spain’s media and experts, including journalist Ignacio Zambero, wasted no time in dismantling the Moroccan narrative. Zambero, writing for El Confidencial, pointed out that Morocco itself was importing 778 megawatts per hour of electricity from Spain during the very period when it allegedly helped restore power to Spain. In fact, Morocco’s dependence on Spain for its own electricity was so stark that the idea it could offer assistance was laughable.
“This is pure propaganda,” stated Zambero, adding that while Spain faced a significant blackout, Morocco’s own electricity grid required urgent adjustments to stabilize its system. “Instead of helping Spain, Morocco was itself receiving power from Spain to keep its lights on.”
Spanish energy expert Jorge Morales further criticized Morocco’s claims, explaining in an interview on COPE that the power grid between the two countries is weak and unreliable. According to Morales, the restoration of electricity in southern Spain had nothing to do with Morocco, but rather with Spain’s own hydroelectric plants, which were able to quickly provide the necessary power to the affected regions.
The situation escalated when La Gaceta exposed further contradictions in Morocco’s propaganda, revealing that while Morocco was making false claims about aiding Spain, it was, in fact, Spain that was exporting electricity to Morocco during the blackout. This raised questions about Morocco’s energy infrastructure, which is so underdeveloped that it cannot even provide reliable power to its own population, let alone assist others.
The embarrassment did not stop there. The European Union has now opened an independent investigation into the cause of the blackout, with reports suggesting that Morocco may have been involved in a cyberattack on Spanish electricity stations. This development only adds fuel to the fire, as critics accuse the Moroccan regime of using the blackout as a smokescreen for its own failures and potential cyber-espionage activities.
Morocco’s latest debacle over electricity assistance has not only exposed the country’s dire energy situation but has also ignited a storm of backlash in Spain. Many Spaniards now view the Moroccan claims as an attempt to distract from the larger issues at hand, including the potential cyberattack and the ongoing energy struggles within Morocco itself.
