Morocco’s Judicial Abdication: How the Makhzen Turned a Blind Eye to Zionist War Cargo at Its Ports

Algiers, Algeria |  On an issue where moral clarity should have been uncompromising, Morocco has once again exposed the moral bankruptcy of its institutions. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights has sounded the alarm over a scandalous failure: the judiciary’s abdication of responsibility in preventing ships loaded with Zionist war materiel from docking at Moroccan ports.

 

According to the Association, emergency petitions were filed before administrative courts in both Tangier and Casablanca to block the Danish shipping giant Maersk from unloading military equipment destined for the Zionist entity’s war machine—equipment designed to fuel ongoing atrocities against the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. Yet, in a display of cynical negligence, the courts scheduled hearings only after the ships had already come and gone.

The outcome was as shameful as it was predictable. One vessel docked in Casablanca on August 4–5, another in Tangier Med on August 7, and by the time judges deigned to look into the case—August 13 and 18—the cargo had long departed Moroccan waters. Legal proceedings were rendered moot, reduced to a hollow charade.

This farce not only exposes the inertia of Morocco’s judiciary, but its subservience. By dragging its feet, the courts allowed lethal cargo to transit Moroccan soil, enabling the Zionist entity’s genocidal war effort while insulating the Makhzen from accountability. This is not neutrality—it is complicity.

The 2011 Moroccan Constitution, in its preamble, explicitly binds the state to international human rights conventions. Yet when confronted with a matter that tested these commitments, the judiciary chose cowardice over courage, timidity over principle. Far from demonstrating independence, the courts reaffirmed their image as extensions of the executive, incapable of resisting political directives even when international law demands otherwise.

For Palestinians under siege, this episode will be remembered not as a bureaucratic mishap, but as a betrayal. While Gaza bleeds, Moroccan ports became silent enablers of occupation, their harbors complicit in carrying weapons of death. The state’s rhetoric of solidarity with Palestine collapses under the weight of such hypocrisy.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights has withdrawn its legal petitions, conceding their futility after the ships’ departure. But its warning remains urgent: vigilance is essential, for Morocco’s ports risk becoming revolving doors for cargo that fuels crimes against humanity.

At stake is more than Morocco’s reputation; it is the nation’s moral compass. A state that prides itself on international commitments cannot claim ignorance when its infrastructure serves the machinery of Zionist genocide. This abdication of responsibility should be condemned for what it is—a stain on Morocco’s conscience, and a betrayal of both international law and the will of its own people, who overwhelmingly reject normalization with the Zionist entity.
