Morocco’s Nabila Mounib Calls for Release of Rif Movement Activists, Journalists, and Bloggers

Algiers- Algeria, May 9, 2024 – During the discussion of the interim assessment of the government’s performance in the Moroccan House of Representatives on Wednesday, Mounib clarified that reports from the Planning Commission, the Audit Board, and other institutions leave no room for doubt that there are weaknesses in the government’s performance. She suggested that conducting a poll to determine whether Moroccans are satisfied with the government and parliament’s work would be beneficial.

Mounib criticized the fusion of the government and parliament into almost one institution, which she deemed a blatant violation of the fundamental principle of the separation of powers in democratic constitutions. She emphasized that a social state requires certain components, with democracy and achieving social justice being foremost among them, rather than simply distributing support to the poor and working to eradicate poverty while ensuring the fair distribution of wealth.

Furthermore, Mounib addressed the pervasiveness of corruption within elected institutions in Morocco, particularly implicating council presidents and parliamentarians in cases of embezzlement of public funds and drug trafficking.
