Mourad Adjal: From Sonelgaz Leadership to Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – September 2025 – The appointment of Mourad Adjal as Algeria’s new Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies represents a decisive and strategic choice, reflecting both the government’s confidence in his professional track record and his long-standing dedication to the national energy sector. Adjal is not a newcomer to this domain; rather, he has been an integral part of Algeria’s energy institutions since the early 1990s, leaving an indelible mark on every position he has held.
Graduating as a State Engineer in Electrotechnics in 1991 from the University of Annaba, Adjal pursued advanced training abroad, equipping himself with a combination of technical expertise and managerial acumen. In 2002, he completed an operational management course at ESSEC Paris, followed by an MBA in marketing-management at ESG Groupe Paris in 2008. A year later, he furthered his training in Operational Management at Euro Med Marseille, consolidating a profile that bridged engineering proficiency with executive leadership.
Despite attractive international prospects, Adjal remained faithful to his homeland, channeling his expertise into Algeria’s energy institutions. His career at Sonelgaz reflects an upward trajectory defined by both competence and unwavering commitment. In April 2010, he became CEO of SOPIEG, a Sonelgaz subsidiary, later serving as CEO of FOSC between 2012 and 2015, and then CEO of SDE from 2016 to 2017. His most prominent role, however, was leading SADEG, Sonelgaz’s largest subsidiary responsible for the distribution of electricity and gas nationwide. His tenure at SADEG culminated in his appointment in December 2021 as Chairman and CEO of the Sonelgaz Group, a recognition of his unmatched devotion and leadership.
Today, under the government of Sifi Ghrieb, Adjal assumes the highly strategic portfolio of Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies. His appointment on 14 September 2025 is widely seen as an extension of his lifelong service to Algeria’s energy sovereignty.
