Nasri Receives Italian Ambassador: Algeria, Strategic Pillar in Italy’s Political, Economic Vision

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – The Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Azouz Nasri, received on Wednesday the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Algeria, Mr. Alberto Cutillo, in a meeting that reaffirmed the depth, solidity, and strategic dimension of Algerian-Italian relations.
During the talks, Mr. Nasri underscored the exceptional quality of bilateral ties, stressing that relations between Algeria and Italy are deeply rooted in a shared civilizational and human heritage. He recalled the sincere positions of solidarity expressed by the Italian people and by Italy’s political and intellectual elites during Algeria’s War of National Liberation, noting that these stances played a decisive role in internationalizing the Algerian cause and anchoring it within European collective memory. This positive historical capital, he emphasized, constituted a solid foundation for the construction of a robust strategic partnership based on mutual trust and reciprocal respect.
Mr. Nasri also welcomed the positive momentum that has characterized Algerian-Italian relations in recent years, particularly following the official visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Rome and the concrete outcomes that resulted from it. He highlighted the renewed impetus given to the strategic partnership between the two countries, within a context marked by a clear and shared political will on the part of both leaderships to elevate cooperation to broader and more inclusive levels. In this regard, Mr. Nasri praised the discussions he held in Rome with his Italian counterpart, Mr. Ignazio La Russa, on the sidelines of his participation—representing the President of the Republic—in the Conference of the Aqaba Process on West Africa.
Emphasizing the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, Mr. Nasri underlined that the meeting constitutes a significant step toward strengthening political and parliamentary coordination, consolidating the central role of parliamentary diplomacy as a lever supporting bilateral relations, and opening promising avenues for the exchange of expertise and the deepening of institutional cooperation.
For his part, Ambassador Alberto Cutillo affirmed that Algeria is Italy’s foremost economic partner in Africa and a strategic partner occupying a central position in Italy’s economic and energy policy. He praised Algeria’s leading role in supporting Italy’s energy security, commending its sustained commitment to contributing positively and effectively in this vital field. The Italian diplomat further called for the expansion of partnership areas and expressed his country’s readiness to place its expertise—particularly in transport and road safety—at the service of Algeria.
In response, Mr. Nasri highlighted the vast opportunities offered by the Algerian market within the framework of ongoing economic reforms, notably following the promulgation of the new investment law. He stressed Algeria’s strong interest in developing partnerships with Italian companies, especially in the fields of industry, agriculture, renewable energies, the circular economy, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups.
At the regional and international levels, both parties reaffirmed the convergence of their positions on priority issues and their firm attachment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly respect for state sovereignty and support for peaceful solutions to conflicts. In this context, Mr. Nasri reiterated Algeria’s constant and unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. The issue of Western Sahara was also addressed, with Mr. Nasri reaffirming Algeria’s principled commitment to the decolonization process and to the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in accordance with relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
Discussions further covered developments in Libya, the Sahel region, and the Mediterranean space, with an emphasis on the necessity of comprehensive political solutions, dialogue, and the strengthening of regional peace and stability, away from all forms of foreign interference. The two sides agreed on the need to enhance parliamentary coordination between Algeria and Italy in order to give bilateral relations a deeper institutional parliamentary dimension and to consolidate the Algerian-Italian partnership as an advanced model of Mediterranean cooperation founded on mutual trust, reciprocal respect, and convergence of visions, in the service of a more stable and prosperous regional space.
