Nasri, UN Resident Coordinator Highlight Algeria’s Enduring Commitment to Peace, Justice, and Multilateralism

Algiers – October 2025 – In a symbolic meeting that underscored the depth and continuity of Algeria’s partnership with the United Nations, Azouz Nasri received, on Wednesday in Algiers, the UN Resident Coordinator and Ambassador, Safina Claudia Ammassari, who paid him a courtesy visit. The encounter, marked by mutual esteem and strategic reflection, coincided with two historic anniversaries—the 63rd anniversary of Algeria’s accession to the United Nations and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the global organization.
According to a communiqué from the Council of the Nation, the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the “privileged cooperative relations between Algeria and the United Nations” and explore promising avenues for strengthening collaboration across diverse fields of shared interest.
During the discussions, both Nasri and Ms. Ammassari emphasized the “profound and historical ties” binding Algeria to the United Nations since October 8, 1962—shortly after the country regained its independence. The statement recalled that since joining the UN, Algeria has “emerged as an international actor steadfastly committed to peace, justice, and international cooperation.”
Nasri reaffirmed Algeria’s principled positions rooted in its revolutionary heritage, declaring that “Algeria has always been the voice of peoples struggling for liberation and self-determination, drawing inspiration from its own experience in the war of liberation against French colonialism.” He reiterated Algeria’s unwavering adherence to “the principles of non-alignment and the peaceful resolution of disputes,” which he described as “the very essence of the United Nations’ mission and its noble objectives.”
The Speaker further highlighted Algeria’s “significant contribution to UN peacekeeping and stabilization efforts,” particularly in the Sahel, in combating terrorism, and in advancing sustainable development, stressing that “peace and security are the cornerstones of progress.”
Nasri also renewed Algeria’s call for “a comprehensive reform of the UN system, especially the Security Council,” to ensure fairer representation and a more balanced reflection of contemporary global realities. He reaffirmed that these principles are “clearly embodied in Algeria’s steadfast defense of the Palestinian cause and its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”
For her part, Ambassador Ammassari expressed her “deep respect and appreciation for Algeria’s pioneering and forward-looking role within the UN,” commending “the fruitful and constructive cooperation between Algerian institutions and UN agencies.” She underscored the value of joint initiatives in “poverty reduction, youth and women’s empowerment, governance enhancement, environmental protection, and the fight against climate change.”
The UN official further praised Algeria’s “ability to translate its international commitments into concrete national policies and programs,” noting that this approach “strengthens its position as a credible and strategic partner of the United Nations.”
Highlighting Algeria’s social achievements, Ms. Ammassari lauded the nation as “an exemplary model in education, social protection, and public health,” pointing out that “Algeria is among the few countries that reinvest revenues from natural resources directly into the well-being of its citizens.” She further praised Algeria’s “commitment to international law, multilateral cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution,” describing it as “a nation whose domestic policies are in perfect harmony with UN principles.”
Both parties reaffirmed the importance of maintaining “constructive dialogue and coordination” between the Algerian Parliament and the UN System in Algeria, particularly in pursuit of common objectives related to peace, security, and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (2023–2027), as well as in supporting Algeria’s ongoing national reforms.
In conclusion, Nasri expressed “the pride of the Council of the Nation in its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),” which has already produced “effective programs for parliamentary capacity-building and legislative performance enhancement.” He voiced satisfaction at the “resumption and expansion of this cooperation towards new and ambitious horizons,” reaffirming Algeria’s role as a cornerstone of regional stability and a steadfast advocate of global equity and multilateral diplomacy.
