National Liberation War: Zouheir Bouamama Praises the Historic and Contemporary Role of the Algerian Press

Algiers – October 2025 – In a tribute to the enduring legacy of Algerian journalism, Minister of Communication Zouheir Bouamama hailed, on Tuesday, the decisive role of the national press before and during the Glorious War of National Liberation, as well as its continued contribution to the defense and promotion of Algeria’s sovereign values in the modern era.
Speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister at the study day themed “Media and Communication: From Serving the Liberation Revolution to Contemporary Challenges,” Bouamama underscored that the Algerian press was not merely a means of communication but an authentic school of intellectual and political struggle that shaped collective awareness and ignited the spirit of resistance that culminated in the historic uprising of November 1, 1954.
“The revolutionary press was the beating heart of the national consciousness,” Bouamama declared, emphasizing that through words, ideas, and unwavering conviction, Algerian journalists played a pivotal role in mobilizing the masses and uniting them under the sacred mission of freeing the homeland from colonial oppression. Beyond national borders, he continued, the press served as Algeria’s voice to the world, exposing the brutal realities of colonial rule and dismantling the walls of censorship erected by the French colonial system.
Reflecting on the post-independence era, the Minister saluted the commitment of the media sector to the nation-building process, the consolidation of state institutions, and the strengthening of national unity through the different phases of Algeria’s modern history. “Our press remained faithful to the spirit of November,” he said, “by standing alongside the people and defending the principles for which the martyrs sacrificed their lives.”
Zouheir Bouamama also drew attention to the strategic role the national media must continue to fulfill amid the evolving challenges of the 21st century—ranging from digital transformation to geopolitical turbulence and information warfare. He stressed that today’s journalists carry the responsibility of safeguarding Algeria’s image, sovereignty, and unity on the national, regional, and international stages.
In conclusion, the Minister reaffirmed that the press, as a pillar of the “New Algeria,” must actively contribute to preserving and amplifying the nation’s achievements under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose reforms have laid the groundwork for a victorious and forward-looking Algeria.
