National Organization of Algerian Journalists Deplores Media Misconduct in Oued El Harrach Tragedy

Algiers, Algeria |  The National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ) has issued a  denunciation of what it described as grave ethical lapses by certain national media outlets in their coverage of the Oued El Harrach bus tragedy, which claimed the lives of 18 citizens.

In a strongly worded statement, the organization expressed profound regret over “practices unworthy of the noble values of journalism and its ethical foundations,” singling out several television and online platforms for sensationalist coverage.

The NOAJ warned against the broadcasting of grieving families in their most vulnerable moments, stressing that journalism must not turn human suffering into spectacle. It called for respect for the dignity of victims and their families, urging all media institutions to refrain from disseminating content that violates the sanctity of death or exploits the anguish of survivors.

Of particular concern was the practice of interviewing patients inside intensive care and emergency wards—an act the organization deemed categorically unacceptable. “In such circumstances, the absolute priority lies with medical teams fighting to save lives, not with cameras intruding upon the privacy of the wounded,” the statement emphasized.

Confronted with these breaches, the NOAJ declared the urgent necessity of drafting a national charter of journalistic ethics. This binding framework, to be elaborated under the stewardship of the journalistic community itself, would clearly delineate responsibilities, establish enforceable standards, and ensure accountability in the event of future violations.

The organization underscored that journalism is first and foremost a sacred mission, not a race for ratings or sensational imagery. “Its calling,” the statement affirmed, “is to serve society with awareness and responsibility, to uphold human dignity—whether of the living or the deceased—and to elevate truth above spectacle.”
