National Organization of Algerian Journalists Hails Historic Integration of Digital Press into Public Procurement Framework

In a development for Algeria’s media landscape, the National Organization of Algerian Journalists has lauded the commencement of the historic decision by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to integrate accredited electronic press outlets into the national framework of eligible media for public procurement contracts. The move is being hailed as a decisive turning point in the evolution of Algeria’s press, offering digital journalism the institutional recognition, financial support, and structural inclusion it has long sought.

The Organization described the initiative as a “qualitative leap” in the advancement of the national media sector, firmly positioning the electronic press as a responsible national voice and a cornerstone of comprehensive development. It emphasized that the measure reflects an unambiguous political will and a strategic vision to reinforce the role of digital journalism within Algeria’s media ecosystem, ensuring its sustainability through access to vital funding and operational resources.

The newly established legal framework, the Organization underscored, will not only foster transparency and fair competition in the allocation of public contracts, but will also encourage the growth of a responsible, professional, and effective digital press. This reform, it noted, is a testament to the state’s determination to cultivate a media environment that can meet the demands of a rapidly transforming digital era.

In a call to action, the Organization urged all members of Algeria’s journalistic community—particularly digital media institutions—to seize this “historic opportunity” to elevate their work. It stressed the need for rigorous adherence to professional ethics, the creation of high-quality and innovative content, and the adoption of modern storytelling formats, from podcasts to interactive videos and investigative journalism, in order to reach broader and more diverse audiences. Such efforts, it stated, must remain rooted in the authentic and noble mission that has defined Algeria’s press across decades of struggle, from the heroic sacrifices of the Liberation War to the resilience displayed during the Black Decade, and into today’s renewed national project.

The Organization further emphasized that the success of this new phase will require the concerted efforts of all stakeholders, active engagement from both national and official bodies, and the constructive contribution of experts and media professionals. It reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending journalists’ rights, safeguarding their achievements, and serving as a bridge between the press and official institutions.

“Algeria’s victorious future will be written with its journalism, its pens, and its media professionals,” the statement declared, envisioning a sector capable of countering disinformation, meeting the expectations of the Algerian people, and producing content worthy of the nation’s aspirations.

The decision marks a defining chapter for the Algerian digital press—one that the Organization aptly described as: “A national digital media… in service of a victorious Algeria.”

The move follows a series of exceptional gains for the national media achieved in 2023, in line with President Tebboune’s commitments to enhance the sector. These reforms have ranged from establishing a modern legislative and regulatory framework—most notably through the new Media Law—to implementing indirect support measures designed to improve working conditions. The sector now stands at the threshold of new achievements, with heightened expectations for the media to accompany Algeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural dynamism, and to rise fully to its national responsibilities.
