Nigerian Parliament Speaker: The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is a Realistic and Strategic Project

Algiers – October 2025 – During his official visit to Algiers, the Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, reaffirmed the viability and strategic importance of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), describing it as a “realistic project” capable of reshaping Africa’s energy landscape and strengthening continental integration.
The statement was made during his meeting with the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, at the Ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of a high-level Nigerian parliamentary delegation, the Secretary of State for Mines Karima Bakir Tafer, the Vice-President of the People’s National Assembly Ibrahim Fakhour, and the Nigerian Ambassador to Algeria.
Mr. Abbas commended Algeria’s sustained efforts to promote African cooperation through large-scale infrastructure projects, emphasizing that the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline stands out for its feasibility as it “crosses only three countries: Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria.” He expressed Nigeria’s “deep pride in the historical ties of cooperation with Algeria” and affirmed his country’s readiness “to strengthen coordination and joint action to bring to fruition strategic projects that generate mutual benefits, particularly in vital sectors such as energy and mining.”
The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to deepen consultations and exchange views on expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in hydrocarbons and mining. Discussions focused on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline — one of the most ambitious regional energy projects — which aims to connect Nigeria’s vast gas reserves to Algeria’s pipeline network, enabling the export of African gas to Europe while meeting the continent’s growing domestic demand.
Both parties reviewed the progress of the technical and economic feasibility study, launched in March, and discussed expanding cooperation into complementary areas, including regulation, capacity-building, and strategic research related to the hydrocarbons industry.
They also underlined the importance of closer coordination within regional and international frameworks, notably within the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) — platforms that can reinforce African influence in global energy governance.
Through these high-level exchanges, Algerian and Nigerian officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations through concrete, mutually beneficial projects that advance economic integration and sustainable development, especially in the oil and gas industries.
For his part, Minister Mohamed Arkab emphasized “the strong momentum characterizing Algeria’s relations with its African partners,” highlighting that this cooperation aligns with the country’s national energy policy, which prioritizes South–South partnerships and the expanded continental presence of Sonatrach, Algeria’s national energy company. He reiterated that Algeria’s approach reflects a broader African vision of development based on integration, shared growth, and effective partnership.
In a related meeting, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal also received the Nigerian parliamentary delegation, where discussions centered on reinforcing bilateral cooperation in energy production, distribution, and renewable technologies.
Minister Adjal outlined Algeria’s “remarkable progress in public energy services” and shared the country’s experiences in engineering, training, and renewable energy development, describing Algeria as “a reliable partner” and calling for “strengthened and expanded cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in supporting its economic and energy development.”
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas praised Algeria’s leadership and commitment to promoting energy development across Africa, especially in renewable energies and green hydrogen production, stressing that his visit aimed “to explore and discuss potential areas of cooperation and exchange of expertise between the two countries.”
